TONI CATANY (Llucmajor, España. 1942)
 

Self taught.

 

He has lived in Barcelona since 1960.

 

In 1968 he published his first articles about Israel and Egypt in Destino magazine, and about the Balearic Isles in La vanguardia.

 

From 1979 he became known internationally because of a photographic job in which he used the old method of calotype.

 

Since his first exhibition in 1972, he has put on over fifty more individual ones and numerous other collective ones all over the world.

 

He is the author of a monograph about the photographer Tomás Monserrat (1873-1944).

 

In 1987 Lunwerg Publishers published a selection of his dead natural forms in Natures Mortes, awarded best photographic book in Photographic Spring 1988 edition.

 

In the Arles International Photography Meetings he won the Book prize with “La meva Mediterrània”, edited by Lunwerg Publishers and awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya as best illustrated book of the year.

 

In July 1991, the France Ministry of Culture awarded him the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

 

In 1994 Lunwerg Publishers published “Somniar deus” y” Obscura memoria”.

 

In 1997, his monograph “Toni Catany .-Fotografies” was given an award by the European Editors, and published simultaneously in Germany, France, England, Italy and Spain.

 

Also in 1977 he won the Best Illustrated Book prize, awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

 

In September 2000, the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) exhibits an anthology of his work Toni Catany. The artist in his paradise.

 

In 2001, the Generalitat de Catalunya gives him the Premio Nacional d’Arts Plástiques.

 

Also in the Ministry of Culture and Education awards him the National Photography Prize.

 

In 2002 he published two books, " Dels qui escriuen ", with portraits of Catalan writers, and PhotoBolsillo nº 45 "Toni Catany ", edited by La Fabrica.

 

In 2003 he published “Record de Llucmajor "

 

In 2004, “Liebana infinita”.

 

In 2006, also with Lunwerg Editors, he edited “Venessia”, the first volume in a series of six, which will compile photos of his trips.
