SIMÕES does not consider himself a hunter of images, as do many photographers. He describes himself as a pursuer of ideas. His projects are the expression of concepts that have been held with him for many years, if not for his whole life. |
| |
Born in Brazil, Luiz Simões left his studies in biology and began his photographic career in Rio de Janeiro in the early 80's. His scientific vocation and his desire to understand and control the processes of creating images have led him to develop his skills to a very high technical level in the studio, outdoors and in the laboratory. |
| |
In 1986, he left the Studio to work as a landscape photographer, travelling through remote areas such as the Andes, Patagonia, the Himalayas, Karakorum, Tibet, and the deserts of Taklamakhan, Atacama and the Sahara. His works have been published in Brazil, Spain and the UK. |
| |
In 1994, he settled in London and started his way back into studio work. |
| |
Since 1996, he has had his studio in Barcelona where he lives and works. |
| |
In his conceptual projects, he is currently using a variety of media such as painting, sculpture, music, constructed objects, and audiovisual installations, in which the photographic image is only part of the whole. |
| |
Completely disagreeing with the phrase an image is worth more than a thousand words, he thinks that an image should be justified by words. |
| |
He believes in the written word as the most precise and sincere form of expression invented by our species. His works in progress are “10 Triptics” and “Tempo”, where the works do not make sense without the words, and “Zaouatallaz” his first novel. |
